- Please be on time for your workday. It is very important for the classroom to be ready before the children arrive.
- Two’s: Arrive by 9:00 AM and plan to stay until 12:15 PM
- Three’s/Four’s: Arrive by 8:30 AM and plan to stay until 12:30 PM
- Remember to focus on and interact with the children. On your workdays, you are one of the teachers. Save the visiting and conversation with other adults for another time. Save the bulk of the clean up for after the children leave for the day. Spend preschool time concentrating on the children. They love it!
- Be a good role model. Use “please” and “thank-you”. Avoid statements that put you down (“I can’t draw” or “I’m not good at…”). Children watch and learn from you.
- Avoid making comparisons between children and discussing behaviors in front of them or where they can hear you.
- Participate in circle time by sitting at circle, singing and playing games. Help children participate if they wish, but don’t force them.
- No weapon play; redirect children to other play.
- Encourage respect for the environment, property, equipment and other people. Use vigorous physical activities to redirect excess energy, frustration or anger.
- Redirect constant disruptive behavior.
- Encourage taking turns; sharing is not always age appropriate.
- Transition times (changing from one activity to another) are the most difficult for preschoolers and teachers. Give a five-minute warning to help children focus on clean up.
