Diversity/Anti-Bias Policy
The preschool environment can provide opportunities for children to grow in their knowledge of self and others. At Eugene’s Parent-Child Preschool, we want to nourish this learning and guide it in a positive direction. EPCP wish to give children the skills and knowledge necessary for successful living in our complex and diverse world.
EPCP’s goals are:
- All children to like who they are without the need to feel superior to anyone else.
- Promote empathic interactions with people of all backgrounds and an understanding of the common humanity we all share.
- Foster a child’s awareness about bias so he/she may begin to identify unfair or untrue images, comments or behavior.
- Cultivate a child’s ability to stand up for him/herself and others when confronted with bias.
Some of these goals can be met within a school year, while others are meant to be seeds sown and cultivated as the child grows.
These years are important and impressionable for children. The Preschool hopes to make them the most enriching years as possible, where each child is honored and does not limit him/herself or others through bias. EPCP believes as children practice sensitivity and recognition towards each other; we can build a foundation for our children to become caring and empowered adults.
Special Occasions and Celebrations
EPCP teaches students respect for beliefs and traditions of people from all backgrounds and encourages families to share their traditions with the Preschool. Parents can notify the Teacher, Class Representative or the President if they want to share an activity or tradition. Reasonable class time, facilities and/or assistance may be made available to facilitate the request.
