HEALTH and SAFETY:
- Your primary responsibility is the safety and well being of the children.
- Wash hands often. Was your hands and the children’s hands when you arrive at school, before eating or cooking, after pet handling, using the toilet, nose blowing, coming inside from outside, etc.
- Roughhousing is inappropriate at preschool (tossing children in the air, swinging them around, lifting them off the ground, etc.). However, a child may need a friendly lap to sit on or a warm hug.
- No hitting, encourage children to use their words.
- Immediately greet any visitors to the preschool grounds to ascertain their identity and purpose for being there.
- Try not to be alone with a child other than your own. For example, Snack Parents only take their own children with them to the kitchen.
- Always leave the bathroom door open when helping children in the bathroom and make sure another adult is present or visible. If this is not possible, the teacher should be the one to help the child or change the diaper.
- If a child needs to change clothes, the Parent Teacher and child should be visible to the teacher or another Parent Teacher. For example, change clothes by the coat rack in the Three’s/Four’s room not in the bathroom.
- Sign children in and out school day. If a child is going home with someone else, notify the teacher and write a note on the sign in/out sheet.
- Keep messy materials in designated areas.
- Use smocks for children doing messy activities and water play.
- On workdays, dress appropriately in washable, comfortable clothes. Wear “chase after kids” shoes. You may need them!
- Inside Safety Rules:
- Standing on chairs and sitting on tables is not safe.
- Blocks are not for throwing, kicking or using as guns. Building and stacking blocks should be no higher than the child’s head/shoulders. Supervise closely.
- Scissors stay at the table.
- No jumping off cube climber.
- Running is for outside, walking for inside. No running particularly in the Art Room hallway. It can be wet and slippery.
- Outside Safety Rules:
- Do not life children onto climbing structures. They will climb it when they are developmentally able to go up and down. NO horses, ropes, balls, rocks, toys on structures.
- Trucks and cars stay in the sand and bark areas, not under the climbing structure.
- Bike helmets are required when riding any wheeled vehicle: bikes, tricycles, wagons, etc.
- Riding toys are for one child at a time. Sit in carts and wagons. No crashing vehicles (check to see if the child knows how to use the brakes and teach when possible). No scooting bikes while standing on the back.
- Parents are not allowed to ride bikes at preschool.
